His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) spoke with Defence Veterans Engagement Project Officer, Annette Rudd, about the campaign during a veterans walk hosted by Mates4Mates on March 15.

The #checkyourmates campaign is a veteran and emergency services suicide prevention project as a part of Operation Thrive, which encourages people to reach out to their mates.

Connect over a phone call or a coffee or a day out on the boat – have a yarn together, and be an active listener. Motivate your mates to check on five more or to encourage each another to get support if needed.

Remember, one call or connection at a tough time can change a life.
