About us
DefenceNT is the Northern Territory Government’s primary office for engaging with matters of defence, national security and veterans’ affairs.
We are committed to realising the Territory’s potential to support Australian Defence Force (ADF) and allied partners’ objectives as a defence sustainment and world class training hub. We are well connected in the north, across the country and abroad, with established networks across defence, government and industry sectors.
We work to ensure that Northern Territory policy aligns with the Commonwealth Government’s national strategic objectives, in order to ease and support defence investment in the north.
We also work to showcase the capabilities of the Territory’s defence industry to manufacture, maintain and sustain Defence equipment, platforms and infrastructure.
Strategic engagement
DefenceNT is a strong advocate of the Northern Territory’s capability to support a greater Defence and national security presence in the region. We work to ensure that Northern Territory’s policy and programs strengthen local industry capabilities and ease Defence investment. We maintain an established network of relationships with senior Defence and industry personnel.
In November 2020, Dr Alan Dupont AO was appointed as the Northern Territory Defence and National Security Advocate, strengthening DefenceNT’s presence in Canberra.
Dr Dupont ensures key decision makers maintain an awareness of the opportunities in northern Australia, and also leads the Northern Territory’s National Security Advisory Group (NSAG).
The NSAG is comprised of a group of Defence experts and retired senior military personnel both from within Australia and abroad. The group provides strategic policy advice, advocates for investment in the Territory and facilitates relationships with senior Australian and foreign governments and defence force leaders.
Defence industry development
DefenceNT works with industry to identify capabilities that support maintenance and sustainment across Defence’s requirements of its vast estate, platforms and programs.
We assist local businesses in increasing their understanding of the Defence industry landscape and we work with prime contractors and key suppliers to understand their requirements.
As the requirements of the ADF and allies evolve, so does the reliance on local industry capability. A dedicated Defence Industry Development team work closely with Defence, prime contractors and Territory businesses to ensure synergies are identified and aligned.
Defence veterans engagement
Veterans in the Northern Territory make up a large contingent of the Territory as a whole. DefenceNT support, recognise and stand with those who serve, have served and support our defence community.
