DefenceNT is the Northern Territory Government's lead for defence engagement and defence industry development, working to maximise defence activity, investment and economic opportunities for the Territory.

We coordinate strategic engagement, advocacy, programs, events and partnerships that support Defence capability and industry growth.

Guided by the Northern Territory Defence Strategy 2026, we work to align Territory priorities with Australia's national defence objectives and strengthen the Northern Territory's role as a strategic hub for military operations, training, sustainment and logistics.

Through strong networks across Defence, government and industry, we promote the capabilities of Territory businesses, facilitate investment and collaboration, and support defence and economic resilience in the Northern Territory.

Strategic engagement

DefenceNT builds and maintains strategic partnerships across Australia and overseas with government, industry, and academia. We advocate for policy settings and decisions that increase Defence activity and presence in the Northern Territory, and actively shape national security discussions regarding northern Australia.

Our Defence Strategy Group brings together senior Defence experts and internationally respected former military leaders, providing strategic policy advice, advocates for investment in the Territory, and helps facilitate high-level relationships with Australian and allied partners.

Defence industry development

DefenceNT works with industry to identify capabilities that support maintenance and sustainment across Defence’s requirements of its vast estate, platforms and programs.

We assist local businesses in increasing their understanding of the Defence industry landscape and we work with prime contractors and key suppliers to understand their requirements.

As the requirements of the ADF and allies evolve, so does the reliance on local industry capability. A dedicated Defence Industry Development team work closely with Defence, prime contractors and Territory businesses to ensure synergies are identified and aligned.

Local forces liaison

The Northern Territory is home to a strong and growing Defence presence, including Australian Defence Force personnel and rotational forces from the United States.

DefenceNT plays a key role in building relationships with local Defence units and visiting forces, supporting engagement activities, and working across government and industry to promote the Territory as a posting of choice for Defence families.
