Chief Minister’s Sharing Our History, Securing Future Peace Study Tour

The Northern Territory has a proud tradition of honouring those who served and recognising our place in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Chief Minister’s Sharing Our History, Securing Future Peace Study Tour continues that tradition, connecting our history to the present and reflecting today’s priorities and enduring partnership with Japan.
Honouring history, exploring strategy and planning for tomorrow, the study tour is aimed at students with an interest in defence, history or international relations.
The study tour to Okinawa, Japan will include sites of military significance, cultural exchanges, and participation in Okinawa Memorial Day commemorations. Students will also gain insights into the importance of Australia-Japan partnerships today.
It is an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of history, reflect on peace and cooperation, consider their career goals and represent the Northern Territory on the international stage.

The 2026 program will be launched in March, following the selection of seven Year 9 and 10 students from across the Territory. The group will travel to Okinawa in June 2026, accompanied by a chaperone and facilitator, to coincide with Okinawa Memorial Day commemorations.
Designed to deepen students’ understanding of the Second World War and its ongoing influence on peace, partnerships and alliances in the Indo-Pacific, the tour also provides a valuable opportunity to build knowledge, broaden perspectives and represent the Northern Territory internationally.
All travel arrangements are included, with students from outside Darwin supported to join the group. Participants must hold a current passport and will be expected to dress in smart casual attire.
Following the tour, students may be invited to share their experiences with school groups, government and defence representatives.

The study tour contributes to rebuilding and enriching the Territory’s future by supporting efforts to grow our economy, strengthen our workforce and restore the Territory lifestyle through opportunities that connect our young people to the wider Indo-Pacific region.
It also aligns with the Northern Territory Government’s defence and education objectives by:
- strengthening people to people links with key regional partners, through the reciprocal relationship with Okinawa, Japan
- showcasing the Territory’s leadership in youth engagement, commemoration, with a focus on military history, and diplomacy
- building awareness of the NT’s role in Australia’s defence posture and developing pathways for future leaders
- promoting pathways for students to real jobs in key Territory industries.
