Chief Minister’s Sharing Our History, Securing Future Peace Study Tour

Australia - Japan 50th Logo

The Northern Territory has a proud tradition of honouring those who served and recognising our place in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Chief Minister’s Sharing Our History, Securing Future Peace Study Tour continues that tradition, connecting our history to the present and reflecting today’s priorities and enduring partnership with Japan.

Honouring history, exploring strategy and planning for tomorrow, the study tour is aimed at students with an interest in defence, history or international relations.

The study tour to Okinawa, Japan will include sites of military significance, cultural exchanges and participation in Okinawa Memorial Day commemorations. Students will also gain insights into the importance of Australia-Japan partnerships today.

It is an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of history, reflect on peace and cooperation, consider their career goals and represent the Northern Territory on the international stage.

  • Launched in September 2025, the program invited students from across the Northern Territory to respond to the question: ‘How did the Second World War shape the partnership between Australia and Japan, and how can it continue to grow in the future?’

Designed to deepen students’ understanding of the Second World War and its ongoing influence on peace, partnerships and alliances in the Indo-Pacific, the tour also provides a valuable opportunity to build knowledge, broaden perspectives and represent the Northern Territory internationally.

The Chief Minister’s Sharing Our History, Securing Future Peace Study Tour has been recognised by the Australian Embassy in Japan as an official event for the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan, highlighting the enduring partnership between our two nations.

  • With 43 entries received, seven Year 10 students from across the Northern Territory were selected to participate in the 2026 study tour.

The selected students demonstrated strong critical thinking and communication skills across a range of submission formats.

It also aligns with the Northern Territory Government’s defence and education objectives by:

    • strengthening people to people links with key regional partners, through the reciprocal relationship with Okinawa, Japan
    • showcasing the Territory’s leadership in youth engagement, commemoration, with a focus on military history, and diplomacy
    • building awareness of the NT’s role in Australia’s defence posture and developing pathways for future leaders
    • promoting pathways for students to real jobs in key Territory industries.
  • The study tour program includes a range of historical, cultural and educational experiences designed to encourage reflection, strengthen cultural understanding and provide students with a deeper appreciation of the relationship between Australia and Japan.
