Industry engagement remains a high priority for DefenceNT, and with major projects in Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs and across the training areas there is strong demand for local business capability, in competition with other large projects in the market. With that engagement we are on the pulse with the pressures Defence, industry and communities are facing with the current $8 billion construction pipeline (2016 to 2025). Through engagement with local Australian Defence Force (ADF) units and the Department of Defence in Canberra, we facilitate a constant flow of information and feedback to further support the operations of Defence and industry.

This Saturday we commemorate a significant anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin.
In 2022, it will be 80 years since Australia faced an unprecedented foreign attack on home soil.
The anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin is a day to reflect on our past and to pay tribute to those servicemen, servicewomen and civilians who were here – those who courageously defended our country, those who selflessly helped others, those who dealt with the aftermath, and of course those who lost their lives.
The 19th of February 1942 marked the first of at least 64 air raids on the Top End of Australia, which continued until November 1943. In commemorating this day we are also passing the story on to the next generation.

DefenceNT is embarking on a defence industry roadshow in the first half of 2022. The first event will be held in Katherine on Wednesday 30 March and will provide local businesses with an understanding of who’s who in the defence industry landscape.
Local Australian Defence Force (ADF) and prime contractor representatives will provide updates on project opportunities and how to become better engaged in future programs. The recently established Office of Defence Industry Support (ODIS) will provide insight into their defence business advisory service and how this will build the capability of defence industry. The Darwin Joint Cyber Security Centre Outreach Service will provide a briefing on cyber security threats and protections to support you to protect your business and enhance defence readiness.
This will be held from 2pm to 4.30pm followed by networking drinks at the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre, Stuart Highway in Katherine.

We introduced the Office of Defence Industry Support (ODIS) in our previous update and now we’re seeing the benefits of the changes here in the NT with two Advisors to service and support local industry development. Sitting within the Department of Defence, Aaron and Peter will work with businesses to improve their ability and capabilities in an effort to support Defence’s expanding needs in Northern Australia.
Aaron McMahon spent 8 years in the Australian Army as an Engineer Officer, including time working at Robertson Barracks as the facilities and modernisation officer. Aaron has worked as a consultant for the NT Government with Growth Grants and Pivot Grants, helping over 70 small businesses improve and promote their organisation. Now as Defence Industry Advisor Aaron is here to deploy his Defence knowledge and his business consulting skills to help further develop the NT’s Defence Industry.
Peter Meyer spent 11 years in the Royal Australian Navy in Electronic Communications working on land based communication stations, surface combatants and submarine service. After Peter left full-time Defence, he has since worked in and around Defence projects in the NT as a senior project manager and business manager, working for or working to the Primes. Peter’s knowledge and skills will help small businesses navigate the challenges of working on Defence projects, and for the major contractors to Defence.

The NT Training Areas and Ranges Upgrades Project scope of work is to upgrade and expand the existing facilities at Robertson Barracks Close Training Area (RCTA), Kangaroo Flats Training Area (KFTA), Mount Bundey Training Area (MBTA); and Bradshaw Field Training Area (BFTA) to support the United States Force Posture Initiatives (USFPI) and expand Defence capability within the Territory.
To support understanding of the ITR and its requirements, an industry briefing will be held for the KFTA and MBTA Delivery Phase Works Packages.

9th Northern Australian Defence Summit
The Australian Defence Magazine, Informa Australia and the Northern Territory Government will host the 9th Northern Australia Defence Summit in Darwin on 5 April 2022. The Summit brings together Australian and international defence and industry leaders to participate in a policy driven discussion around strategic sovereign maritime capability in the North; strengthening local defence industry to support the development of the defence estate and infrastructure; and assess Northern Australia’s strategic importance.

Indo Pacific 2022 International Maritime Exposition
INDO-PACIFIC 2022 is the signature maritime industry event in the Indo Pacific Region, where maritime and naval suppliers can promote their capability’s to key defence and industry decision makers. On 20 January 1942 the Japanese submarine I – 124 sank off the Darwin coastline with all 80 crew. The vessel still lies on the seabed 96 km north west of Darwin with 80 souls aboard.
On 20 January 2022 (the 80th anniversary of the sinking) the Australian-Japanese Assoc NT (AJANT) hosted a small event at the Brinkin cliffs, to unveil a sign next to a tree that was planted in 2019 as a gesture of goodwill.
The 2022 ceremony was attended by representatives of the Embassy of Japan (Mr Kaya-Mashiko) and the NT Government (Hon Michael Gunner Chief Minister of the NT). Several descendants of the Japanese submariners were also present at this moving ceremony. On 18 February 2022, a further ceremony will be held to unveil a plaque with the names of all 80 Japanese submariners who rest in Australian waters.
