What you will do on the study tour

You will travel with a small group of other Northern Territory (NT) students and experienced adult chaperones.

During the tour you could:

• explore museums, memorials and historic sites
• learn about the Battle of Okinawa and the experiences of people who lived through it
• meet Japanese students and take part in a school exchange
• experience Okinawan food, culture and everyday life
• learn more about Australia’s relationship with Japan
• talk about international cooperation, security and peace
• share ideas with other students.

It will be educational, but it will also be a very different experience from learning in a classroom.

Who can apply

The 2027 study tour competition is open to NT Year 9 students.

It doesn’t matter if you go to public or private school, if you are homeschooled, remote, regional or urban, just so long as you are currently enrolled in Year 9.

Selection criteria

Your entry should show us how you think.

We want to hear your ideas about history, our region and the future.

When preparing your entry, you might like to consider:

• curiosity and original thinking
• an understanding of why history still matters
• an interest in Australia’s relationships with other countries
• an ability to connect events from the past with the world today
• clear communication
• enthusiasm about representing the NT.

You will not be judged on how expensive or polished your entry looks. What matters is the quality of your ideas and how well you communicate them.

Submission formats

Do you have to write an essay? Not necessarily.

You can choose from a range of submission formats, including an essay, recorded PowerPoint presentation or website.
